One question we are sometimes asked by customers considering one of our full-size military display kits is whether the product arrives completely finished or whether any additional preparation is needed before assembly and display.

The honest answer is somewhere in between.

Because our products are manufactured using modern 3D printing technology, some customers assume these kits are similar to traditional hobby model kits that require extensive sanding, filler work, specialist paints and advanced modelling experience.

That is not really what we produce at 762mm.

Instead, we specialise in full-size military display kits based on some of the most iconic service designs ever used by British forces. From the unmistakable SLR, to the modern SA80 platform, through to support systems such as the renowned GPMG, our kits are created for collectors, veterans and military history enthusiasts who want to own and build a substantial display piece rather than a traditional hobby model.

While some customers choose to add small finishing touches to achieve their preferred final appearance, our products are designed as straightforward full-size display models intended for collectors, veterans, military enthusiasts and historical display purposes rather than conventional hobby modelling. If you check our channels such as Facebook and YouTube, you'll also see a couple of videos about changes you can make to some elements of the kits if you particularly want to.

These Are Not Traditional Scale Model Kits

When people think of military model kits, they often think of products made by companies such as Airfix — small-scale tanks, aircraft or military vehicles requiring careful assembly, precision painting and considerable hobby modelling skill. Our products are very different.

762mm kits are designed as full-size 1:1 scale display models inspired by historically significant military equipment and iconic service designs. They are non-functioning decorative models intended for collection, display and historical appreciation.

The goal is not to create a small-scale hobby project. The goal is to own and display a full-size piece of military history.

Do The Kits Require Sanding?

In some cases, very light sanding may be helpful during assembly or preparation for painting.

Because these products are manufactured using precision 3D printing technology, occasional small contact points or minor surface marks may benefit from a little attention if you are aiming for an especially refined finish. However, this is generally very minor preparation work. You are not dealing with large amounts of surface correction, reshaping or heavy-duty finishing work. For most customers, a quick light sanding in a few areas is more than sufficient.

Will I Need Filler Or Putty?

Some customers who enjoy achieving the smoothest possible finish may choose to use a small amount of modelling putty or wood-filler style product on certain joins before painting.

This is entirely optional. It is not something required simply to assemble and enjoy the finished model.

Unlike rough prototype 3D prints, our kits are produced as finished display products rather than unfinished raw prints requiring major correction. For customers who enjoy fine detailing, small finishing touches can simply become part of the build process.

What Paint Should Be Used?

If you choose to paint your model, there is no need for specialist industrial coatings or advanced finishing equipment. Standard aerosol paints work perfectly well and many customers use readily available spray paints from retailers such as Hobbycraft.

Popular finishes often include:

  • Matte black

  • Satin black

  • Olive green

  • Olive drab military finishes

  • Touch ups with chrome pens or silver model paints to emulate "wear and tear" on edges

Painting is entirely optional, but for collectors wanting a particular regimental appearance or authentic military look, standard hobby paints will achieve excellent results.

Do I Need Specialist Modelling Skills?

No specialist modelling experience is required.

Our products are designed so that military enthusiasts, collectors and hobbyists can assemble them without needing advanced model-making knowledge.

The typical process is straightforward:

  • Assemble the kit

  • Make any minor finishing adjustments if desired

  • Paint if you choose to customise the finish

  • Display and enjoy the finished model

If you are comfortable with basic assembly and enjoy military history, you will have no difficulty building one of our kits.

Built For Collectors, Not Conventional Hobby Modellers

At 762mm, our products sit in a unique category. They are not traditional small-scale hobby kits. They are not airsoft products. They are not functional mechanical items. They are not designed for practical use.

They are carefully designed full-size military display models created for collectors, veterans, military enthusiasts and those who appreciate historically significant military design.

Assembly is part of the enjoyment and the finished display piece is the reward.

Either way, the process is far simpler than many people assume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are 762mm kits the same as traditional military model kits?

No. Traditional model kits are usually small-scale hobby projects. 762mm products are full-size 1:1 scale military display models designed primarily for collectors and military enthusiasts.

Do I need to sand the parts before assembly?

Some very light sanding may occasionally improve certain contact points, but major preparation work is not normally required.

Do I need specialist paint?

No. Standard aerosol hobby paints or general-purpose spray paints work perfectly well.

Do these kits require filler or putty?

Some customers choose to use small amounts of filler for cosmetic perfection, but this is entirely optional rather than necessary.

Are these designed as display pieces only?

Yes. These products are non-functioning display models created for collectors, enthusiasts and historical display purposes.

Are these suitable for military collectors?

Yes. Our kits are specifically designed for collectors, veterans, military enthusiasts and historical display purposes.

At 762mm, we believe military history deserves to be displayed properly — not hidden away in a box, and certainly not confused with ordinary hobby kits.
